McKerr

McKerr rhymes with “fair” not “fur”.

I am descended from McKerrs from in and around Portadown, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. My great-grandfather, James M’Kerr AKA James McKerr was raised a Quaker but later joined the Church of Ireland.

Proposed origins for this surname include:

• Clan Kerr (with some patriotic superfluous Scottishisation)

– This is the most obvious descent to claim.

• Clan Currie

• Clan Ferguson

• Mac an Gheairr / Mac An Ghirr / McGirr / McGerr / MacGerr / MacGirr / MacGhir

McGerrs are known to have been in Co. Armagh since at least the 17th century.
